The Green Dot Is the New Flirting

A pixel changed colour. That is all that happened. That is not all that happened.

It was a Tuesday and I was doing nothing, which is when most of my worst ideas start.

My phone was face down on the cushion next to me. I picked it up without a reason and saw their name sitting there with a green dot next to it.

I put it down like that meant something.

    Green dot. Active now.

I picked it up again. Still there. I put it face down and watched the show for a while and understood nothing that happened in it.

    They did not text.

    What the Green Dot Does

Nothing. It does nothing. It is a pixel. Someone picked up their phone.

What it feels like is a different question.

It feels like presence. Like proximity. Like they are one tap away, which is one step away from feeling like they could close that distance if they wanted to.

The read receipt, the last seen, the active now. None of them are communication. All of them land like something just happened.

    The Micro Games

You notice the dot. You do not open the app immediately because that would show you were watching, which you were.

You wait. You open it. You see the conversation. You have nothing casual enough to say and casual is the only register available right now. You close the app.

    You open it again.

    Still active.

You think about typing something. You decide against it. You close the app.

    The dot goes grey.

They went offline without texting you. That is not a message. You pick up the laptop. The show is still going. You have missed a lot of it.

    The Specific Humiliation

The humiliation is not that they did not text.

The humiliation is that you felt something from a dot.

You were fine. You were watching a show. You picked up your phone for no reason and a green pixel appeared next to their name and your chest did something without asking you first. Small thing. Upper part. The kind of tightening you suppress immediately because you are not going to be the person who makes this a thing.

    Nothing was happening.

You know this. You feel it anyway.

    "You up"

That is the green dot with a question attached. The whole night rearranges around those two words. You are suddenly deciding something. The dot just got you ready for it.

    What We Reward

I have let "lol" count as keeping in touch before. I have sat in a conversation that was technically ongoing and understood, somewhere, that nothing was actually happening. At some point I started doing the accounting wrong and could not figure out when it happened.

Presence is not pursuit. The green dot costs them nothing. Showing up costs something.

I burned GHOSTED at some point that night. Creamy Oud. I lit it and forgot about it and came back to a room that already smelled like dark wood and smoke that had decided to stay.

The dot was grey by the time the incense finished.

    FAQ

What does it mean when someone is online but not texting you? It means they are on their phone. That is all it means. The dot is not a message. It just looks like one from where you are standing.

Is watching someone's online status a red flag? Your evening changed. That is the answer. You were watching a show and then you were watching a dot and then the show ended and you do not know what happened in it. The dot did not do anything. You gave it the whole evening anyway.

Why do read receipts cause anxiety? Because they give you just enough to have a bad time. You know the message landed. You do not know what happened after. That gap fills up fast.

What is the difference between someone being interested and just being active online? When someone is interested you do not spend your evening decoding their availability from a dot. You have messages. You have plans. The status indicator is not a thing you have looked at.

I watched the show to the end. I do not remember how it ended.
